Reviews

A fascinating, monumental book that should be compulsory for all history and politics students and many others. Roslyn Petelin PhD, Honorary Associate Professor, School of Communication and Arts, The University of Queensland & Author, How Writing Works ...this is a book designed to appeal to a broad audience interested in communication, rhetoric, and persuasive speaking...uses the example and linguistic history of Australia as a point of reference, discussing how Australians employ language in extraordinary ways...passionate people who wielded their words as firmly and effectively as battlefield swords and guns... Miller provides all the information needed to place these speeches in proper context... Students of media studies, communication, and history, from high school into college levels (as well as many general interest readers learning about leadership, oration, or political power) will find Australians Speak Out: Persuasive Language Styles a treasure trove of examples like no other linguistics coverage ...reaching out into worldwide circles with key lessons about using everyday language to reach people ...highly recommended, top-notch selection that belongs in the collections of a diverse set of libraries... Ideally, it will be used in classrooms and discussion groups as a solid example of language styles and effective speech. D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
