Overview

CONTENT WARNING This book contains graphic eyewitness testimony and historical photographs documenting acts of mass violence and human suffering. Some material may be disturbing to readers. Historical photographs included in this volume may be distressing. This book is intended for readers aged 18 and over. It is published solely for historical, educational, and scholarly purposes. Fritsch greeted arriving prisoners with the following speech: ""I inform you that you have not come here to a sanatorium, but to a German concentration camp, from which there is no other exit than through the chimney (the crematorium). If someone does not like this, he may go at once to the wires (high voltage). If there are Jews in the transport, they have no right to live longer than two weeks; if there are priests, they may live one month; the rest three months."" With particular sadism, Lagerführer Fritsch introduced a starvation bunker for prisoners captured during escape attempts. In this cell, incidents of cannibalism occurred. A prisoner assigned to clean it described the following scene: ""When the door was opened, a terrible stench of corpses burst forth. After my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I saw in the corner the corpse of a prisoner with his entrails torn out, and beside him, in a half-reclining position, another dead prisoner. In his hand he held the liver torn from the body of his deceased companion. Death overtook him at the moment of devouring the liver.""
