Augustine in May

Overview

To continue his convalescence after a bout of severe food poisoning, Agostino returns to visit his mother in the small coastal town where she has been living since separating from her husband. The last time Agostino was there, five months earlier during the Christmas holidays, he witnessed a scene that shocked him and that since then has fueled an obsession that he cannot overcome. In an attempt to escape from the trauma, Agostino starts seeing two women older than him, both with children. Soon, however, he realizes that these possible relationships are nothing more than a reflection of his obsession: the past continues to live in the present, changing him from victim to executioner in a cycle that seems to have no end. In a crescendo of psychological tension and desire, Agostino searches for a solution to his torment. Will he manage to break the bond that imprisons him or will the past continue to condition his future? Agostino a maggio is an intense and provocative novel that explores the complexities of desire, obsession and the difficult relationship between a woman who wants to rebuild her life and a son who is not yet ready to accept all this Due to food poisoning, Augustine is forced to return to his old beach house, once his family's vacation home but now, after his parents' separation, his single mother's home. On his last vacation at the home of the beautiful Claudia, Augustine had accidentally witnessed a gallant encounter between Claudia and her lover, and this incident had upset him to the point that he would rather not return there. The need for iodine, together with the impossibility of broaching such a thorny subject, had brought him back to the place of the unpleasant revelation. So Augustine found himself on the beach studying classical Greek theater, combining just the Oedipus Rex, that is, the last topic it was convenient for him to mull over after Claudia had separated from Dad and after the play last seen. Although he feels attraction for two young women he met in the village, Lucrezia and Marianne, his Oedipus complex finds in them confirmations rather than elements of rupture with respect to his obsession, dragging him into a series of unsettling considerations about how much that particular complex generates a displacement on other, formally natural, relationships and not genuine liberation. The surprise ending will try to set things right, yes, but until when?
