Overview

This anthology is offered as a partial reflection of some of the best new work that has been written between 1980 and 1999. Not found in other published texts, the 57 monologues in this book are all from produced plays from both established and emerging new writers and are specifically suited for auditioning. Selected because of how well they represent American theatre over the past few decades and because of their suitability for young actors between the ages of 15 and 25, this collection is a wonderful resource for teachers and actors looking for new material for audition purposes, competitions, and studio work. While the themes are primarily those of interest to this age group, the writers and characters embody the diversity of America today. A number of women writers are included here, as well as female characters both young and old, contemporary and historical. Author Information

Roger Ellis earned his M.A. in English and Drama from the University of Santa Clara, and his Ph.D. in Dramatic Arts from the University of California at Berkeley. During that time he was also guest stage director for several colleges and universities. He has authored or edited eight books in theatre, plus numerous articles, essays and short stories. In 1991 he initiated an ethnic theatre program at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, creating guest artist residencies and staging plays celebrating cultural diversity. In addition, he has been director of the University's Shakespeare Festival since 1993. He has worked professionally as an actor or director with various Michigan and California theatres and has served as President of the Theatre Alliance of Michigan for the past six years. He is currently a Professor of Theatre at Grand Valley State University.
