Overview-The urban transformation of San Francisco is featured in a+u 18:04 with an examination of new neighborhoods created through culture and open spaces The urban transformation of San Francisco is featured in a+u 18:04 with guest editor Craig W. Hartman, SOM's Senior Consulting Design Partner in San Francisco. The issue examines the transformation of the area centered on Transbay Transit Center as a reaction to population growth in the urban center. The mixed development combines public transportation, housings, offices, cultural and green spaces to create a new neighborhood. This wave of change is expanding to other areas around the bay and is creating new communities. We believe the catalyst for this transformation is culture, as described in an essay by Hartman. This hypothesis is explored through 2 examples, the Yerba Buena Garden to SFMOMA and the Golden Gate Park to the de Young Museum. Other examples which utilize old factories, parking areas, and piers have filled urban voids with cultural connections. Text in English and Japanese.
