Overview

Atys is a French opera (tragÃ(c)die en musique) in a prologue and five acts by Jean-Baptiste Lully to a libretto by Philippe Quinault, based on Ovid's Fasti. It was first performed on 24 April 1676 at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Atys is considered by some to be Lully's masterpiece. The opera tells the story of Atys, a beautiful youth loved by the goddess Cybèle. However, Cybèle jealously demands Atys's complete devotion, leading to tragic consequences when he falls in love with the nymph Sangaride. The opera explores themes of love, jealousy, divine power, and the destructive nature of unyielding devotion. Lully's score is notable for its expressive recitatives, elaborate choruses, and evocative instrumental music.
