OverviewWe recognize that many Christians cannot give clear definitions regarding what they believe. This is not the case for pastors. A pastor knows what he believes and he is seeking to impart those beliefs to his congregation. However, we may be shocked to hear that while most pastors know what they believe, many do not know why they believe it. Pastors of differing denominations (and even within the same denomination) bicker regarding various points of doctrine. We all claim to serve the same God and we utilize the same Scripture as the foundation of our beliefs, yet we hold many conflicting views regarding theology. We hold tightly to our core beliefs, as we should, but do we ever question why we hold those beliefs to be true? We naturally assume that our interpretation of Scripture is correct. As a result we rarely examine the origin of our interpretation. The book, Attributes of a successful pastor provides a thought provoking and spiritually challenging look at pastoral success. The book will encourage the pastor to take a fresh look at Scripture as he compares his ideology with his theology. If we, as pastors, want to be considered successful, then we must develop certain attributes that yield success. If we are to be successful in God's eyes, then these attributes must be firmly rooted in Scripture. And if we are to have a proper understanding of a biblical view of pastoral success, then we must understand how our own preconceived religious ideology influences how we understand and apply Scripture. This book helps the pastor examine his religious heritage so he may gain a better understanding of Scripture. Therefore, it is not for the faint of heart. It asks hard questions and demands genuine answers. Anyone, regardless if you are a pastor or not, who is serious regarding their spiritual formation will benefit from this book. This book takes a look at the development of thought regarding pastoral success in America. It seeks to engage the reader to identify areas where personal definitions of pastoral success are created by an American Christian culture rather than an honest interpretation of Scripture. The reader will be challenged to not only understand what he believes, but also why he holds to those beliefs to be true. After reading this book, the pastor will have a better understanding regarding how to become a successful pastor in a post-Christian American culture. Myths regarding pastoral success are explored and the reader is challenged to rethink ten attributes that will help us become successful in God's eyes. The book closes with attitudes that hinder our success and the implications of ignoring (or embracing) a proper biblical framework for pastoral success.
