Overview

The spraying of molten materials is a manufacturing process of growing importance, not only in the vast field of metal powder production, but also for spray forming and coating and in the spraying of non-metallic melts such as ceramics and organic chemicals. This book is unique in its field in that it unifies the science and applications of melt atomization, and other aspects of this interdisciplinary field, with clarity and authority. Starting from the basic physics of the atomization of cold liquids, the book examines the scientific bases of the various atomizing processes, and of the techniques used to characterize atomized powders. It then discusses the applicability of the various techniques to all the major metals melting from 200 to 2000 degrees centigrade, to non-metals, and also to spray forming and coating processes. The applications of theory and advanced computational modelling techniques to melt spraying and particle solidification are explained with reference to plant design and performance. Modern Instrumentation for diagnosing spray structure is described, as are the applications of modelling an instrumentation in intelligent processing. This book is intended for metal powder producers; students of powder metallurgy, materials science and metallurgy (postgraduate and final year undergraduates); users and producers of (non-) metallic powders; manufacturers of atomization plant; research scientists and engineers in relevant disciplines.
