Author Information

Dr. Mauro Romero Leal Passos is an MD, with a Masters in Gynecology Medicine and a PhD in Microbiology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is currently Professor and Chief of the Department of Sexually Transmissible Diseases of the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at the same university. Dr. Mauro was one of the founders of the Brazilian STD Society and current editor-in-chief of the Brazilian Journal of STD (open access), since its launch in 1989. Has experience in the areas of genital infectious diseases and medical microbiology, with special emphasis on sexually transmitted diseases, syphilis, HPV and HIV.In 2013, on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach, along with hundreds of Brazilian citizens, he organized the Vaccine March, an action that charged the Federal Government of Brazil the free availability of HPV vaccine. Two months after the popular activity led by Dr. Mauro Romero, the Brazilian Ministry of Health announced the introduction in the National Immunization Program schedule of vaccination for girls aged 9 - 13 years with the quadrivalent vaccine against HPV 6, 11, 16, 18. In 2004, Dr. Romero authored the Document of Niterói to Combat Acquired and Congenital Syphilis. On March 9, 2017, the Federal Law was approved creating the National Day to Combat Syphilis, to be celebrated on the third Saturday of October of each year.
