Overview

Was the famous philosopher Plato a liar? Plato, more than two thousand years ago, said that his description of Atlantis and how it had been swamped was true. Notwithstanding Plato's statement, many say that his description was simply a figment of his imagination and false. Jonathan Northcote, after his investigations which led to this book, proposes that Plato's description was the truth. So, in this book, you will be taken on a journey of investigation, and discovery, in the steps of Jonathan's investigations. It will cover ancient tales and modern knowledge. You will consider Plato's description of Atlantis and compare it to modern, scientific, descriptions of the submerged Hatton Rockall area in the North Atlantic. The investigation is backed up by references to over three hundred books and scientific articles and over two hundred web resources, covering ancient mythology, the geology, geomorphology and bathymetry of the submerged Hatton Rockall area, oceanography and the palaeo-climate of the area as well as other scientific facts. Ultimately, you are invited to decide whether you agree with the author that Plato was describing a real place or whether his, Plato's, description is really merely a made-up story. The issue is whether Plato's story was set in a real, geographical, place; it is not about Plato's description of the Atlantean civilisation. Plato said that the swamping of Atlantis occurred nine thousand years before him. This, historically, is also the beginning of the Holocene epoch; a time recognised by science as being an era of truly immense floods, powerful earthquakes and volcanism.
