Astronomical Photometry and Spectroscopy Measurement of Light in Astronomy

Overview

""Astronomical Photometry and Spectroscopy"" by B.G. Anandarao and V. Venkata Raman is a thorough exploration of observational astronomy, covering the techniques of photometry and spectroscopy in the optical and near-infrared regions. With a general introduction to astronomical objects and radiation processes, the book delves into the principles of telescopes, detectors, photometry, and spectroscopy. The authors provide examples and describe data processing and enhancement techniques, making it an invaluable resource for postgraduate students and young research workers in astronomy and astrophysics. The book's comprehensive coverage and detailed explanations make it an essential guide for those seeking to understand the underlying physical processes of celestial phenomena.

Author Information

Boddapati Gnana Anandarao is a retired Senior Professor from Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), a Unit of Department of Space, Ahmedabad. He graduated from the Physics Department, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 1971. He joined PRL in 1971 and obtained his doctorate degree in Ionospheric Physics in 1977. During a year-long stint at the Observatoire de Meudon, France during 1979-80, he worked on Air-borne Far-Infrared Astronomy. After his return, he worked as a faculty member in the Astronomy Astrophysics Division of PRL till his retirement in 2010. His fields of interest include Earth's Upper Atmosphere, Optical and Near-infrared Astronomy, and Instrumentation. He has 135 publications in the fields of Ionospheric Physics, Stellar Evolution, Star Formation, and Spectroscopic Instrumentation, in reputed international and national journals and in conference proceedings. He is a member of the Astronomical Society of India and the International Astronomical Union. He currently resides in Hyderabad. V. Venkataraman is currently working as a Scientist in Space Physics Laboratory (SPL), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He started his career as a researcher in condensed matter physics at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam. Later, he worked as a scientist in Astronomy and Astrophysics Division of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad for about 16 years, wherein stellar sources like evolved stars, young stellar objects, novae and super-nova were studied through photometric and spectroscopic near-infrared observations from Mt. Abu infrared observatory. After moving to SPL, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram, he is currently working on the spectroscopic investigation of comets at UV and mid-infrared wavelengths and involved in exploring the influence of solar transients on planetary atmospheres using the in-situ observations from space-based observatories. He has published over 19 refereed articles in national and international journals and 28 papers in proceedings.
