Astrology in the letters of C. G. Jung

Overview

This study systematically reconstructs and analyzes the relationship between C. G. Jung and astrology through a direct examination of his letters, showing how astrology played a real, albeit theoretically complex, role in his psychological and philosophical journey. The exploration of his correspondence allows us to follow the evolution of Jungian thought: from his early experimental investigations, in which he used horoscopes as an interpretative aid in the most enigmatic clinical cases, to the maturation of his later positions, in which astrology is reinterpreted as a synchronistic and symbolic phenomenon rather than as a presumed cosmic influence. What emerges is an image of astrology as archaic psychology, a heritage of projective images through which ancient man organized his knowledge of the soul. Analysis of the letters reveals that Jung neither rejects nor dogmatically accepts astrology: he treats it as an interpretative method, as a symbolic language that allows access to deep psychic content, complementary to dream analysis, mythical amplification, and other diagnostic tools of depth psychology. Astrology is thus stripped of its causal claims and cosmological status and returned to its proper dimension: that of the meaningful correspondence between inner and outer events, a key concept in the theory of synchronicity. This volume offers a philological and psychological reading of the epistolary sources, contextualizing them within the broader contemporary epistemological debate on the nature of interpretative methods and the cognitive function of symbols. The result is an original contribution to the understanding of Jungian psychology, capable of restoring the complexity of its dialogue with astrology and showing how, when correctly reinterpreted, it can still today represent a code of access to the narrative of the Self and the symbolic imagination of the psyche.
