The following is a quote from my book: Lay on your back with your head pointing northward and your legs stretched out straight on a firm mattress or futon, no pillow. If you choose to use a crystal, position it to the north of your head. Place your arms most comfortably at right angles to your body, bent at your elbows so that your hands are also pointing northward. Your arms should still be laying flat. You could hold small crystals in your hands. However, if this position for your arms is not comfortable for you, do not place crystals in your hands if they are pointing to the south, because the energy from the crystals will probably activate your lower chakras. If you have enough hair, it should also be flowing to the north. You will thus be taking advantage of the north/south magnetic energy flow of the Earth giving you much better mental control. However, when very tired, I have had short and sometimes very intense trips while all curled up.
