Assiniboine: Book of Colors

Overview

Designed to promote language revitalization and early learning, the Assiniboine Book of Colors is an interesting and culturally rich introduction to the Assiniboine (Nakoda) language. Readers are introduced to real Assiniboine words, phonetic pronunciations, and distinctive linguistic characteristics that set the language apart from English through a straightforward but insightful examination of colors. For students of all ages, the book provides information on letter distinctions, nasal sounds, and pronunciation guides. This book, which promotes connection, understanding, and the preservation of a living Indigenous language, is both an educational tool and a celebration of Assiniboine heritage. It is based on cultural pride.

Author Information

Vicki Bisbee is an enrolled member of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes in northeastern Montana. She has lived there for over 50 years and graduated from Poplar High School. Ken Ryan gave her the Assiniboine name Shunk Togaja Wiya (Gray Wolf Woman) in 1996. Vicki received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Northern Montana College. After retirement from Wolf Point School District as a school counselor, she met with Michael Turcott, a language instructor, and received an Assiniboine Dictionary that was published in 2018. Vicki decided to publish colorful language materials for all ages. There are variations of the Assiniboine language, mostly dependent on the area where Assiniboine live; but there is no right or wrong way to speak.
