Overview

The objective of this study is to evaluate the management effectiveness of Grão Mogol State Park and its compliance with Law 9,985 of July 18, 2000, National System of Nature Conservation Units - SNUC, based on data collected through a questionnaire administered to fifty residents of the municipality of Grão Mogol and three semi-structured interviews conducted with the park manager, a representative of the park area residents, and the secretary of the environment for the 2004-2008 administration, all from the municipality of Grão Mogol. In view of the increased exploitation of natural resources and their consequent reduction, the creation of nature conservation units has been a solution found by the public authorities for the preservation and environmental conservation of areas of great biological importance. The Grão Mogol State Park, a Nature Conservation Unit for Integral Protection, has as its basic objectives environmental preservation, scientific research, recreation, and ecological tourism. Management effectiveness should be understood as the unit's ability to fulfill the objectives for which it was created.
