Overview

The fourth issue of the Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Review (APTIR) contains five research articles. The articles cover the following topics: Impact of SAFTA on trade in environmentally sensitive goods in South Asia: emerging challenges and policy options; the relationship between liberalization in the logistics sector and trade facilitation; Thailand's agricultural sector and free trade agreements; enhancing the movement of natural persons in the ASEAN region: opportunities and constraints; tigers and dragons against elephants: doest the rising Chinese and Indian share of trade and foreign direct investment crowd out Thailand and other ASEAN countries?This issue also contains four policy briefs on the role of technological capabilities in enhancing FDI flows in developing Asia-Pacific economies; agricultural liberalization in preferential trading agreements-the case of the ASEAN FTA; is there a need for market access plus indicators?; and how promising is SAFTA. Finally, the issue contains an executive summary of a recent study on trade and investment published by the ESCAP secretariat on an exploration of the need for and cost of selected trade facilitation measures in Asia and the Pacific in the context of the WTO negotiations.
