OverviewMark De'Lisser's striking debut poetry collection, Ashes to the breeze, heralds the arrival of an extraordinary new talent. The poems are an evocative reminder of what it is to be human, to love, to lose, to grow, to find courage, to overcome hurt and pain, and to recognise the fragility of existence. The collection is an exquisite tribute to human nature's powers of renewal. It is a heartfelt exploration of the transformational powers of acceptance and letting go. Speaking to both the personal and the universal, the poems take us on a healing journey that often delves into the synergies between human emotions and the natural world as a way of reflecting on our innate need for genuine connection and love. In the relentless pace of our modern world, Ashes to the breeze asks us to pause and contemplate the mysteries and miracles that are present all around us, and to reimagine our place in the story of life. In 2005, he moved to Bath to study Media Communications and Psychology at Bath Spa University, at which time he started writing his first poems. Some years after graduating, Mark began sharing his poems at Open Mics and poetry events around Bath and Bristol. Soon he became a regular on the local circuit. During this time, Mark was able to combine his love of poetry and music by co-fronting the jazz fusion band 'Omar Don't Scare' which gained popularity around Bath, Bristol and London. Mark still lives in Bath, where he works as a youth mentor. He often uses poetry writing and spoken word as a way of engaging and inspiring the young people with whom he works. He also facilitates a number of poetry-writing and spoken-word workshops for organisations and youth charities. In 2021, Mark was commissioned by the Bath Abbey to write a poetic response to their 'Monuments, Empire and Slavery' exhibition, which explored the links between the Abbey and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
