""Gr 1-3–This unique nonfiction picture book takes a wonderful approach to discussing different characteristics and personalities people may have, and how emotional responses to situations are shaped by their experiences. Differences between characteristics, skills, and emotions are defined, and spreads are dedicated to different facets of personality such as being impulsive, empathetic, and timid. Several examples for each are given, along with what distinguishes them and some benefits and downsides of having them. In one spread, Manuela is shown as often daydreaming and not really paying attention due to having a great imagination. While this may result in lack of focus at times, it can also lead to creation, such as the inventions Manuela’s father creates. Readers may see reflections of themselves in some of the characters and will come to understand why some individuals may be one way or another, as the book does a wonderful job of showing people’s behavior in different situations. Illustrations are colorful, detailed, and eye-catching and present different people in a variety of settings. An opening chapter offers key definitions (of characteristic, ability, emotion) while establishing the book’s live-and-let-live tone: “Everybody’s different!” The 10 chapters that follow each center on fictional children (“This is Fatimah”) and two characteristics (“Sometimes Fatimah is unruly”/ “Sometimes Fatimah is energetic”). Sidebars further clarify the nature of the traits while gently describing some of their positive and negative effects. Text boxes prompt reflection with the goal of self-awareness (“How do you know you’re being unruly?”). Contextualizing examples occasionally veer into stereotype (“Two chatty ladies were babbling”) and pearl-clutching (about a child desiring cake for dinner: “Just imagine what might have happened if she had succeeded!”). Su pasatiempo ms inusual es corregir textos en busca de errores ortogrficos, gramaticales y de estilo. Ana Kobern (actualmente conocida comoNastka Lisova) es una ilustradora de libros infantiles apasionada de la acuarela y el dibujo digital a mano. Desde el 2024 ha publicado sus libros bajo el nombre Nastka Lisova. Como madre de dos hijos y amante de la exploracin, los deportes, el baile y la msica, crea libros atractivos para los jvenes lectores que celebran la belleza y la diversidad del mundo a la vez que les ayudan a comprender sus sentimientos. Her most unusual pastime is proofreading texts for errors in spelling, grammar, and style. Ana Kobern(currently known asNastka Lisova) is a children's book illustrator who is passionate about watercolor and digital hand-drawn art. Since 2024, she has been publishing under her new name, Nastka Lisova. As a mother of two and a lover of exploration, sports, dance, and music, she creates engaging books for young readers that celebrate the beauty and diversity of the world while helping them understand their feelings. Her illustrations feature vibrant color palettes, detailed elements, and charming characters, often reflecting real-life experiences. She lives in a small town in Ukraine.
