Overview

What does a person's life look like from the point of view of soul? Why not ask soul. Go on an adventure with soul in order to live an authentic life through initiation into soul's calling. Using the technique of active imagination as rediscovered by Dr. Carl Jung, the dialogues struggle with soul, which leads to changes in the author and in soul. Soul becomes a guide. Author's initial descent into soul encounters an invitation, as it names its art. Its art makes the soul a companion that will require many heart rending sessions. The descent is also soul's ascent; in doing so the soul reshapes author's ego, identity, and life and gives him songs of soul. Refusal Man makes an appearance, being the living embodiment of the many refusals to accept life's offerings. Many issues arise on how to reduce the influence of this Refusal Man. An ancient way of being arises upon learning to trust the soul: everything is alive. A number of spiritual exercises are the result. Soul educates him on what soul is and how to build soul's home. Soul explores original life and the author's psychological curse . Soul elaborates on how what is spiritual is practical and appears in personified form of Laura, after long guidance from the Greek god, Hermes. Inner Guide evolves out of soul that is the dream awake. Soul delves deeper into its poetries. It makes real what happens and broadens one's horizon. Charley is an inner man who wants to kill the author, if he could. Their conversation is riveting. Shape shifting becomes a way of being. Soul takes the author deeper into love and gratitude. The adventure closes fully enmeshed in the art of darkness: proving the unprovable to soul, a perspective from Zen, and finally a celebration of soul's adventures. A brief afterword summarizes some of intellectual and spiritual ideas and practices the author learned and how they are of use in everyday life.

Author Information

I have been a writer most of my adult life. Three works of prose and approximately twenty books of poetry appear on my website, ronboggs.net. I am committed to the life of being a poet and writer; it is my avocation and passion. It is the edge of soul's calling. Simultaneously, many explorations have been the focus of intense study in a number of subjects over the years. American history was one of those subjects, leading me to advanced degrees from two universities in American history and culture, culminating in a doctoral dissertation on the Culture of Liberty. Liberty versus power in American History as well as its larger form in human history in the conflict between liberty and tyranny has guided my research. Another subject of major importance to me has been Jungian psychology and its ways of dealing with the whole person, not just the ego, but also the total self, including the Archetypal Self. Exploring the nature of this ego-Self axis, I have expounded on this reality at length in my prose works. Zen and the practice of Zen, also, has been a major preoccupation of mine over the last fifteen years. I have delved in depth into Zen writings and practices and have used what I have experienced to guide my writings and poetry, opening new vistas to discovery and being. Teaching and mentoring have also occupied my attention. I taught as a teaching assistant at a university for a number of years and have recently lectured at a small liberal arts university in American History. I have mentored many students in exceedingly complex and demanding fields of financial planning and advanced financial concepts. To support myself while I pursued the above loves, I worked in the financial planning field. I received a certification for financial planning and had my own financial planning firm. In addition, I taught courses on passing the NASD examinations for licensing. For two years, I taught retirement planning courses and estate planning courses for the College of Financial Planning. I worked for large, major mutual fund companies and insurance companies dealing with advanced planning issues such as charitable planning, annuity and retirement planning, and have extensive experience in Advanced Marketing Divisions of two major mutual fund companies. My retirement planning experience extended to a stint working for the Social Security Administration.
