OverviewArt Nouveau was a multinational movement that flowered simultaneously in many cities of Europe and the Americas, driven by the enthusiasm of a new century. It was a quiet revolution headed by distinguished architects whose names will forever remain synonymous with opulence and innovation: Guimard in France, Horta in Belgium. Sullivan in America, Gaudi in Spain, Mackintosh in Scotland, Saarinen in Finland. The series of movements that formed Art Nouveau are here introduced by Victor Arwas, a leading international expert on the period, and described in a series of essays by specialists from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London: Paul Greenhalgh, Head of Research at the V&A and curator of the recent exhibition Art Nouveau 1890-1914, writes on The Tensile Line; Ghislaine Wood, assistant curator of the exhibition, on Art Nouveau at the V&A; and Alan Graves on Art Nouveau Tilework. Anna Jackson discusses Japan and the creation of Art Nouveau in an essay entitled Tradition and Modernity. Jane Pavitt describes the architecture of Prague under the title New Bohemians. Jennifer Opie writes about Art Nouveau in Helsinki. Siegfried Bing's facades as a marketing tool for Art Nouveau are discussed by Gabriel Weisberg; Ian Millman writes on Georges de Feure and L'Art Nouveau Bing; and Gillian Naylor on Hector Guimard. Finally, Victor Arwas introduces an extensive appendix of contemporary plates on Art Nouveau architecture in France. Art Nouveau flourished, for an instant only, for the Western world was in a hurry to move on to new ideas driven by a machine age that had little respect for sinuous lines but despite repeated rejections by professional architects, designers and academics, it has remained an architecture of mass appeal throughout the twentieth century.
