Overview

Ars Sacra, or sacred art, has always been an integral part of the Roman Catholic Church. From the frescos of Giotto and Michelangelo, to the canvases of Caravaggio and sculptures of Donatello, churches throughout Italy, and around the world, have been the home of numerous artworks that explore the central mysteries of faith with images that illuminate the scriptures and interpret their meaning for those who seek a greater understanding of our divine purpose in life. Commissioned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese, and after a period of biblical and theological study, Italian artist Carla Carli Mazzucato began the process of creating images for a fourteen-painting series that would become the Stations of the Cross for the Church of Corpus Domini in Bolzano, Italy. In her distinct modern-expressionist style, Mazzucato chose to present not only the traditional, scriptural story of Jesus Christ, but also her thematic interpretation of how His journey and sacrifice impact each of us personally in the complex, modern world in which we live. This book is a presentation of the Faces of Redemption original oil painting series by Mazzucato which was installed in the Church of Corpus Domini, Bolzano, Italy in 1991. The book also presents the artist's Via Crucis series of fourteen original woodcut prints that likewise explore the central mystery of faith in our search for understanding. Each image is accompanied by the artist's own reflections on the divine example of Jesus revealed through His story. Three editions of the book, English, Italian and Spanish are available.

"Carla Carli Mazzucato (born 2 November 1935) is a 20th-century Italian artist whose contributions to the world of contemporary art help define the ""modern expressionist"" movement.[1] Known for her unique style and bold color palette, her paintings are described by critics as ""dynamic,""[2] ""graceful"", [3] ""timeless,""[4] and have been compared to the masterworks of Chagall, Renoir, Monet and Van Gogh.[5] Mazzucato's art is part of numerous collections in Europe, North America and Asia. Her commissioned work, ""Evening at the Opera"" hangs in the Detroit Opera House and the artist's fourteen-painting contemporary interpretation of the Passion of Christ is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese collection installed in the church of Corpus Domini in Bolzano, Italy.
