Then the meaning is contracted a bit to refer more especially to the stadium races where they compete in order to win prizes. Later comes the transposition or metaphor and career becomes a symbol of life. Thus in Cicero: Exigum nobis vitae curriculum natura circumscripsit. Life is represented as a race through a stadium -as an effort from the first moment to the last moment, along a determined trajectory- that is, a chain of doings. Without remedy, life is not a being there already, a lying down, but a journey along a certain path; therefore something to be done is the whole line of a man's doing. And since no one gives us the line that we have to follow, but each one decides it for himself, whether he likes it or not, man always finds himself, but above all at the full beginning of his existence, when he comes out of his adolescence, with which he has to solve among innumerable possible paths the race of his life.
