Overview

"The Occupation took everything from her ... except her will to survive. ""Armelle,"" Rudi said. ""What are you doing in here? You should be in the other room with Mia."" ""Nee, I'm staying here. This is my war too."" Rudi's right, Armelle. You shouldn't be here,"" Henk agreed. Armelle walked over to him, grabbed his arm, and looked up as she held herself against him. ""I'm not leaving, Henk."" As a young girl living near Arnhem, in the Netherlands, Armelle van Galen felt happy and secure in her family home. Her parents and her wonderful cousin, Toon ensured her feelings of love and safety. However, all that changed when German forces invaded in May 1940. In her determination to survive, Armelle fought her own personal battles, not only against the invaders, but also against hunger, the weather, and heart-breaking loss."
