Arise: Christian Insights on Love, Wholeness, and Jung

Overview

The central idea of this book is that the key to a faithful, joyful, spiritual life is the fullest possible development of our unlimited potential for love. This love goes beyond affection, desire, or passion. Real love is a feeling of respect, empathetic understanding, solicitude, and a willingness to sacrifice something of oneself for the good of another. By applying the depth psychology of Carl Gustav Jung, this book guides readers in how we may find a deeper relationship with God, with ourselves and with others by growing in greater self-awareness.

Author Information

Monsignor Chester Michael was a parish priest and spiritual director for 72 years who, in the late 1980s, launched a two-year, non-denominational program that both trains spiritual directors and enriches the lives of seekers. He brought to his Spiritual Direction Institute the application of his lifelong studies of Jungian psychology which began at Notre Dame University in the 1950s, as well as what he learned while earning a Doctorate in Sacred Theology in 1975 from Saint Mary's University in Baltimore. This book, first published in 1981, reflects his teachings on Jung, wholeness, and love.
