Arik and Company: A Documentary Poem

Overview

There've always been questions about Arik. As far back as '52 when a night patrol Spotted figures crossing the sand dunes. Arik told his men to open fire, ask questions later. A poetic exploration of Ariel ""Arik"" Sharon might sound counterintuitive, like an oxymoron. And true, much of the monologue that Atar Hadari presents us with reads more like spoken history - yet with a deliberate creative twist. Like poetry, these vignettes about Sharon's military career and private milestones may not answer all the questions a reader might have. But, like poetry, they stir up emotions, push buttons, confirm - or maybe shake up - opinions and beliefs as they sketch a rich and agitating portrait of a divisive and contentious figure in Israeli politics.

Reviews

""Atar Hadari's extraordinary book Arik & Co. reads like a masterly biography magically transformed into vital poetry. Was Ariel Sharon a hero? Was he a monster? The force of a strong and twisting narrative spine, fleshed out in earthy interior monologs and dialogues, brings both the man and the era to inescapable life... Reader, beware: You will find this book very difficult to put down, and when you do put it down, you will find it has a grip on you."" -Alicia Ostriker, Author of The Holy and Broken Bliss: Poems in Plague Time, New York State Poet 2018-2021
