Overview

ACAW: Bioclimatic Ceramic Assemblies II chronicles the research and prototypes developed by six teams for the second Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop in 2018. A collaboration between Boston Valley Terra Cotta, the preeminent terracotta manufacturer in the United States and the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), the workshop's aim is to explore the bioclimatic potential of terracotta in contemporary architecture. Projects by AECOM/Alfred University, Morphosis, University at Buffalo/Alfred University, Sasaki/Studio NYL, SHoP Architects and Radical/Matter explore the structural and environmental potential of the material and the opportunities for new expression and building performance this can bring to architecture. The teams are composed of practicing architects, engineers, ceramic artists and academics. Team AECOM/Alfred University developed.

Author Information

Omar Khan is an Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) and the co-director of the Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies (SMART) Community of Excellence. Laura Garofalo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University at Buffalo (SUNY). John Krouse is President and CEO of Boston Valley Terra Cotta, holds his B.S. in Ceramic Engineering and minor in Ceramic Sculpture from Alfred University. Andy Brayman is a ceramic artist and founded The Matter Factory in Kansas City in 2005. It is part artist studio, part laboratory, and part factory. In addition to producing objects of his design, Brayman researches and builds computationally controlled machines for use in art making.
