OverviewThis text looks at the excavation along the route of the Newbury Bypass which revealed ten archaeological sites, two of which contained in situ Mesolithic and Early Roman remains of national importance. The evidence is presented in chronological order and includes a Mesolithic home base site, signs of possible Bronze Age occupation, four Roman farmsteads and two medieval pottery and tile production sites. The excavations as a whole revealed changing patterns in the use and settlement of the environment in a large area of varied topography and geology.
