He has authored several books and articles on the history and archaeology of the Near East, including Rome in the East: The Transformation of an Empire, which was winner of the James Henry Breasted History Prize and Choice Outstanding Academic Book in 2000. He is currently Editor in Chief of Afghanistan, the journal of the American Institute of Afghanistan Studies. Born in Australia, he now lives in the Scottish Borders.
