Nobuyoshi Araki nació en Tokio en 1940. Habiéndole regalado su padre una cámara a la temprana edad de doce años, Araki ha estado haciendo fotos desde entonces. Estudió fotografía y cine en la Universidad de Chiba y se volcó a la fotografía comercial poco después de graduarse. En 1970 creó sus famosos Xeroxed Photo Albums, que produjo en una edición limitada y envió a amigos, críticos de arte y gente seleccionada aleatoriamente de la guía telefónica.
