Overview

Applied Power Quality: Analysis, Modelling, Design and Implementation of Power Quality Monitoring Systems is a systematic account of the modern field of power quality as it transforms to reflect changes in generation, loads, management techniques and improvements in monitoring devices and systems. It examines the management of power quality (including those which are emerging) including system planning levels, the emission allocation process and equipment immunity. The work reviews power quality disturbances and their impacts on equipment. It comprehensively assesses current power quality emission and allocation standards, including their application and deficiencies for power quality disturbances across steady state voltage; voltage unbalance; harmonics; voltage fluctuations, flicker and rapid voltage change; and voltage sags. The work reviews how readers may design and implement power quality monitoring schemes including: monitoring instruments; monitoring methodologies; data storage; data analysis and indices; reporting methods including benchmarking; and monitoring standards. It concludes with surveys of the electrical performance of modern equipment including renewable energy devices as it pertains to power quality. In all cases, the book draws on reliable sources of power quality data, measurements and studies (both laboratory and field) that have been undertaken by the Australian Power Quality and Reliability Centre over the past 20 years.

Author Information

Sarath Perera graduated from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka with a BSc (Eng) specialising in Power. He obtained his MEngSc from the University of New South Wales and PhD from the University of Wollongong. He has been on the academic staff at the University of Wollongong since 1988. His current research interests are in the general area of power quality and in particular harmonics, voltage fluctuations and flicker and voltage unbalance. He also has strong interests in modelling and simulation. He is the Chair of the Technical Committee on Power Quality (EL-034) of the Standards Australia Committee. He has been, and is, an active contributor to several CIGRE working groups. He is currently the Technical Director of the Australian Power Quality and Reliability Centre. Sean Elphick graduated from the University of Wollongong with a B.E. (elec) degree in 2002. He obtained an M.Eng (Res) in 2012. In 2003 he joined the Integral Energy Power Quality Centre (now Australian Power Quality and Reliability Centre) at the University of Wollongong. His current role involves providing support for projects that the centre is engaged on. This work includes consulting and research. He is heavily involved in the production of the National Long-Term Power Quality Survey (LTNPQS), a power quality survey involving most electricity distributors in Australia. His interests lie in power quality monitoring methodology and instrumentation and power quality standards. He is also a past member of CIGRE working group C4.112 (power quality monitoring) and a current member of CIGRE working group C4.27 (benchmarking of power quality performance in transmission systems) and Standards Australia subcommittee EL42-3 (AS4777).
