OverviewThe Aphasia Screening Test (AST) is a comprehensive, sensitive and reliable screening test of language deficit in adult brain-damaged patients. Aimed at the severe to moderately impaired patient, it yields quantitative as well as qualitative information providing a profile on which to base treatment. Re-testing provides an objective measure of changes in language function. AST is easy to use and interpret and the materials are attractively presented and highly portable. The test is widely used and has been translated into several languages. In its revised form the new AST manual contains standardization data and many examples of patient profiles before and after treatment. Another new feature of the revised text is the inclusion of a short form AST which will be useful to clinicians seeking faster and less detailed assessments.
