OverviewApallic syndrome (waking coma) is one of the most severe neurological disorders. Epidemiological data are essential for planning optimal care for those affected. However, such data are only available in sufficient quantity and quality for trauma-related syndromes. This book is therefore based on a survey of the incidence of acute apallic syndrome in Styria (Austria), regardless of aetiology. This revealed a significant increase in hypoxic causes compared to older studies. Furthermore, this book provides historical background, a detailed clinical description of apallic syndrome and a literature review of existing epidemiological studies. Taking into account the Austrian standard 'Structures for the long-term care of patients in a persistent vegetative state' (ÖNORM K 1940), an exemplary long-term care model was developed at the Albert Schweitzer Clinic in Graz through close collaboration with the referring intensive care units, rehabilitation facilities and neurological departments in Styria.
