OverviewOperation Shingle was a bold, and deseperate, gamble by the Allies to break the stalemate in Italy. The plan was to outflank the German army firmly entrenched behind their Gustav Line with an amphibious assault at Anzio that would sunder the German defenses and leave the road to Rome wide open. But Operation Overlord, the landings in Normandy, had first priority for all men and supplies and was draining them from all theaters at an accelerating rate. If Shingle were to happen it had to happen quickly. Planning time was limited, and men, material, and the all-important landing craft needed for the assault were in short supply. When the Allied troops launched the suprise assault on January 22, 1944, they didi it with too few men, too few supplies, and too little support. The result was a desperate battle fought by men who knew there was no retreat; where only two opitions existed: victory or deathUtilizing first-hand accounts of front-line soliders and after-action reports and official hisotires to round out the story, T. E. Fehrenbach vividly recreates that desperate period where brave men rose to the challenge against incredible odds and ultimately wrested victory from the jaws of almost certain defeat.
