OverviewThis paper presents the comparative characteristics of the antimicrobial activity of selected lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains and antibiotics. The metabiotics of probiotic LAB inhibited the growth of pathogenic, conditionally pathogenic bacteria, different etiology antibiotic resistant bacteria with different efficiency depending on pathogens isolation sources. It was shown that bacteriocins of LAB in the same concentration did not affect growth of the commensal microbiota strains, belonging to different genera and species. Lactobacillus and Enterococcus genera showed high sensitivity to investigated antibiotics (about 70%). Several strains of LAB of Enterococcus genus are able to produce exopolysaccharides (EPS). The Enterococcus faecium KE-5 (MDC 9662) strain, which produces disaccharide polymers with antimicrobial activity and consists of glucose and galactose, was selected. The growth suppression of different pneumonia-causing strains by antimicrobial preparations of the Enterococcus genus was shown.
