To attempt a resistance against it's dominion, during its strength, would have been only sacrificing to it what was least devoted: while a belief of Antipodes, which is certainly true; or a disbelief of transubstantiation, which is certainly false; were reckoned equal to the crimes of Socrates: and subjected the daring rebel to the spiritual discipline of the inquisition. But in the present decline of it's power, when Ghosts and Spirits are delivered up as playthings to children; it may not be a desperate enterprize to combat this mighty Colossus. It is, I am conscious, a feeble hand, that here aims a blow, and it will be no wonder if one of the first attempts of this kind makes but little impression, but at least it may perhaps encourage some abler arm to push the tottering monster with greater force; and fetch it to the ground.
