Reviews

The ten essays, all but one written between 2010 and 2012, testify to Bishop Stephen Platten’s passion for liturgy which, through its shape, momentum and richness of language and symbol, makes a pattern capable of forming worshippers into the likeness of Christ. … Platten’s questing intellect and wide reading shine through this collection. Rational good sense and creative insight walk hand-in-hand, sometimes not quite in step, and unanswered questions remain. But the fact that they have been asked, and that liturgy, society and politics have been brought into animated conversation, is a service to Church and world. -- Bridget Nichols * Modern Believing * Together, these chapters are a testament to the breadth of Bishop Platten’s reading in history, science, literature, art, architecture and anthropology as well as theology. … This is a very good read, not only for those interested in or in charge of liturgy but for any intellectually enquiring person. -- Christopher Moody * Theology * The breadth and depth of Stephen Platten’s theological and liturgical interests are clearly displayed in this wide-ranging collection which deserves a wide readership. -- The Revd Canon Dr Simon Jones, Fellow & Chaplain, Merton College Oxford This is definitely a volume that should be read by those who think they are not interested in liturgy. They will be surprised how much of value they learn. -- Paul F. Bradshaw, Emeritus Professor of Liturgy, University of Notre Dame Understanding what Matthew Arnold called the sea of faith’s melancholy, long, withdrawing roar is important for appreciating Platten’s elegant and elegiac reflection on the uses of the liturgy in nourishing mission. This is the Bishop at his most characteristic and best: perceptive, well-read, and able to hold our attention, but always surprising us with insights nourished by a deep pastoral sensibility. -- The Rt Revd Dr David Stancliffe (former Bishop of Salisbury) * The Church Times * Platten brings substantial erudition to the task, quoting a dazzling array of writers, philosophers, historians and theologians to illuminate our traditions of worship. Buildings as sacred spaces, the Eucharist, baptism and confirmation, biblical liturgies, Common Worship and the Book of Common Prayer all lie within his purview – and all receive fresh insights, provoking the reader to ponder anew. … This is a book to savour: one that will provide a source of reference and inspiration for many years. -- Peter Clough * The Reader *
