Animals in Time, Volume 3: American History

Overview

Hop, pounce, flap, and bounce back in time with these A-Z animal adventure stories. Catch fish and plant crops with Bary the Bear as the Pilgrims build a new life in a new world. Dodge whizzing bullets and roaring flames with Griffy the Goose as he helps First Lady Dolley Madison escape from the White House during the War of 1812. And hike a tall mound of earth with Uri the Urial for a better view as astronauts of Apollo 11 shoot toward the moon during the 1969 Space Race. Kids will meet American heroes and artists such as Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Dr. Mary Walker, Neil Armstrong, and many others. They will journey through the history of the United States by learning how leaders, battles, and everyday folks have shaped the nation, from early exploration to the modern age. Animals in Time materials work well for a range of ages. Kids in upper elementary will gain understanding of the events in history based on the abundant facts supporting each story, while younger children will connect to the memorable characters and their adventures. The stories progress alphabetically, which provides for the possibility of a letter-of-the-week approach. Great to use at home or in a group setting! We just did week 2 of Animals in Time! The kids love this program. They can't wait till next week to hear the next story and find out what the animal is. They really like the worksheets as well. The games are amazing also! I love how it all works together!!! -Abbie The kids in our community love Animals in Time so much that the families with older kids have started volunteering to be the helpers. They would be so sad to miss this amazing class that their younger friends get to do! -Carrie I keep forgetting to mention how much we love Animals in Time. I have been reading the stories, but waited to let the kids have the activity book until after the holidays. Let me just say I can never find it because they pull it out and do it. We were supposed to be doing math, but instead my son was looking at his activity book. -Annmarie Do you remember when you were a kid, trying to appear uninterested, but eagerly soaking up every juicy story told by relatives around the Sunday dinner table? Adventure, humor, mystery, circumstances. That's what reading Animals in Time feels like! Twenty-six stories from American history, told by A-Z animals like Fritz the Frog and Lydia the Ladybug, will chronologically transport your child to many important events, people, dates, and places. Eyewitnesses tell of journeys (Chris Columbus and Meriwether Lewis), national tragedies (burning of D.C. and September 11 attack), crucial documents (Declaration of Independence and the 14th Amendment), and twenty more foundational stories about our country, her people, and her special place in world history. Delightful drawings by twenty-seven young homeschooled artists (ages 3-17) chronicle the stories and are sure to inspire your child to grab his sketchpad and colored pencils for his own imaginative interpretation of American history. Plus the stories are packed with related details that could serve as a starting point for further exploration and experimentation like how to make arroz con gandules for dinner or how to recognize a tulip poplar tree. Finally, if you're in the mood for travel, Animals in Time could serve as an itinerary for traveling the U.S.A. and learning about geography with trips to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, the Great Lakes, or the Golden Gate Bridge. Whether your homeschooling one child, reading to your grandkids, or teaching an entire elementary school classroom, Animals in Time is sure to become a favorite read-aloud resource for adults and children. Highly recommended! Diane B. Lockman As a homeschool mom with children spanning from 2-10 years old, I am so excited to have found this book! I love the idea of teaching history to my kiddos through beautifully written and engaging story telling rather than just another boring, fact-filled textbook. Hosanna Rodriquez goes way beyond the typically given historical synopsis, and includes so much more enriching and thoroughly researched information surrounding the historical events and people included in the stories. I love watching the, Wow really?!? I never knew that! moments happen around our kitchen table. My kids have been equally inspired by the incredible illustrations in the book, which are by the way, all kid drawn! Very impressive! This is definitely a resource I will continue to return to and use for many years. Worth every penny for sure! Jenny
