OverviewAnger is OKAY, Violence is NOT, written by Julie Federico and illustrated by Glori Alexander, is a thoughtful, much-needed addition to pre-school teachers' and social workers' libraries. With vibrant, TV-cartoon-like illustrations and simple, direct text appropriate for even the youngest children, this picture book explores the complexity and vitality of anger, and when it is appropriately expressed and when it is not. True emotional intelligence is something recognized and respected but rarely taught and discussed, even among adults. The goal of this worthy project is to engage children in a safe, non-threatening exploration of complicated, often-frightening feelings. Federico lets kids know that anger is normal, though managing its expression can be complicated. Clear language and child-friendly art invite a direct, straightforward examination of when anger is appropriate and how to safely express it through art, physical activity, tears. What's not OK is hitting, biting, throwing and hurting. The book gently and clearly reminds its vulnerable audience that adults can find the journey just as tricky as children do. If an adult hurts a child or someone they love, Federico instructs her young readers that telling a trusted adult is a safe and right action for them to take. Needless to say, this is complex emotional territory, and Federico's tone is perfect: even, loving, simple, clear. Educators and caregivers may well find this a helpful tool in eliciting important conversations, and the book includes contact information for The National Domestic Violence Hotline and other respected sources of support. Mary Martinez Five Stars: Read This Book to Your Children, Please! Again, author Julie K. Federico advocates for young ones. In her first book, Some Parts are Not for Sharing, she educates about body safety using a pair of amazing fish to illustrate her important story. You'll meet those same adorable fish in her newest book, Anger is Okay Violence is Not. Designed for preschoolers, subjects of anger and violence are discussed in easy to understand ways and with suggestions, for the little ones, of what to do. Statistics are grim for children in households where anger and violence happen. As a health professional, I say this children's book needs to find its way to every home, every preschool and every library. -Judy Martin-Urban, Nurse Practitioner "Great for small children and very relatable! 5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny, well illustrated, important DV book! Someone complained about the length of this book, but I think it is just perfect for a small child, and although I am reading it in Kindle, I am going to buy one for my office lobby - and if it gets taken by a needy child then I will get another!) Anger is Okay Violence is Not and Some Parts are Not for Sharing. By: Julie Federico. Both of these books teach children two very valuable lessons! One is about how to safely handle domestic violence and the other is about basic body safety rules. I feel that it's so important to teach my son about these topics even at a young age. Both of these books should be available in every classroom around the country. The pictures are colorful, and the message is conveyed in a warm manner. Jacob gives both of these books two baby thumbs up. 5.0 out of 5 stars Short story and straight to the point. Perfect resource Reviewed in the United Kingdom Even though this was written by American writers and the language seems different from what I may use, it's still a great resource for parents, social workers, and those who work with children. The pictures are eye-catching, and the sentences are short and to the point which is sometimes just what's needed. I'd highly recommend it.
