Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor Information"Doreen Funk was born and raised in Boggy Creek Manitoba, a very remote area that was populated with friends and family. Her family had 2 channels on TV, and the highlight of Saturday night was Hockey Night in Canada. She spent many hours reading of faraway places where her imagination could take her on many adventures. Her interest in nature was 'sparked"" at an early age since her playground was the open fields, lakes, sloughs and bushes. As a child, she spent many hours exploring under rocks looking for spiders and creepy crawlies, in sloughs hunting for salamanders, tadpoles and frogs, and looking for minnows and leeches in the nearby lakes. As she grew older, she left her treasured playground behind to become an adult. Her fascination for nature was rekindled as she became a mother and saw life once more through the eyes of a child. She was hooked once more on the wonders that nature had to offer. She became an Early Childhood Educator and began working in a large daycare center in the interior of beautiful British Columbia. She found a new playground and began to realize how important it is to share this love of nature with the children in her care as it became apparent that so many children had limited knowledge of their environment which heightened their fears. Her life changed again after becoming a grandmother and as her grandchildren grew she found that they too had fears. By then, she had a lot of experience teaching children about the fascinations of ""creepy crawlies"" and thought that teaching her grandchildren would be ""a walk in the park"". But wait, she was a grandmother and with that came expectations. She wasn't supposed to go ""bug hunting""! She was suppose to bake cookies with her apron on and stay home in her rocking chair and knit all day. (Although, she does like warm chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven). She soon realized that she had to break the stereotype of how grandparents were depicted and let the world know that kids can have fun with their grandparents as well as benefit from the wisdom that comes with their age. She started writing the Angel and Granny Series with this concept in mind, hoping to accomplish two goals. Teach children and their parents, to respect nature and its beauty and through knowledge, fears can be conquered. As well, to let the world know that grandparent s can be fun, full of life and adventure, and who are just ""big kids"" and might enjoy flipping a rock to look for bugs too!"
