Born in 1846 in Greenup County, Kentucky, to parents whose names are not widely recorded, McElroy's early years were marked by a developing interest in literature and printing. As a young man, he enlisted in the Union Army and was later captured, spending a long and harrowing period as a prisoner in the Confederate camp at Andersonville. These experiences deeply influenced his later work, particularly his renowned four-volume account Andersonville a story of rebel military prisons, which vividly portrays the suffering and endurance of captured soldiers. Following the war, McElroy built a successful career in journalism, contributing to various newspapers and using his platform to discuss social and political issues of the time. He also wrote The Red Acorn, a novel that further reflected his wartime experiences. McElroy's writings combined factual documentation with emotional depth, preserving an important historical perspective. He died in 1929 at the age of 83.
