And Then I Closed My Eyes...

Overview

""And then I closed my eyes..."" is the story of an Iranian photographer living in Canada who, one day, on his way back home from the forest, turns a bend and-at the sudden presence of his mother in the passenger seat-finds himself suspended between a past that is distant yet drawing closer and a present that, as the narrator passes through the streets and hospitals of a strange city, recedes further and further away with every moment. Mehdi Marashi is an Iranian fiction writer, translator, and researcher based in Canada. He has published three short story collections-Nafas-Tang (""Short of Breath""), Ketābat-e Bahār (""The Writing of Spring""), and Az Jādeh ke Migozashtim (""As We Passed the Road"")-as well as the novels The Story of Zarathustra, The Custom of This Woman Is Silence, and They No Longer Passed That Station, released both in Iran and internationally. Among his other works are rewritten editions of The Tales of Samak the Ayyar and The Story of Sanjan: The Tale of the Restless Zoroastrians' Pact in India. The latter is an extended essay revisiting Qesseh-ye Sanjan, a poetic text composed by Bahman Kayqobad, a Parsi of India, in 969 Yazdegirdi (1590 CE), recounting the Zoroastrians' flight from Iran during the Arab conquest. His translation work includes three poetry collections by Pier Paolo Pasolini-Where Is My Homeland?, In the Heart of a Child, and Forgotten Poems-as well as Roland Barthes' Mourning Diary. In addition, Marashi organized multiple sessions of the ""Hezardastan Montreal Fiction Workshop"" (2011-2023), bringing together writers based in Montreal, and has taught creative writing classes in the city.
