Reviews

"Sarah Primiano dedicates her book, Anchors Aweigh, Mommy's Underway, to all the children of those who are serving or have served their country in the military. This picture book is a sweet tribute to the sacrifices children make for the protection of their country. Maya's mom serves in the Navy and is deployed at sea. While Mommy is gone, Daddy does all he can to help Maya cope. Together, they practice kindness and patience. They also play together. To keep Mommy close in their hearts, they share what they can. For instance, Maya and her dad have tacos on Tuesdays, just like they do on Mommy's ship. While apart, Maya misses her Mommy greatly, and the days seem to drag by. However, Maya realizes that her Mommy will return. When Mommy returns home, Maya clings to her for the next few days. Even while separated by miles and miles, people can stay close together in their hearts. Too often, we forget the families of those who serve in the military, protecting us and our nation. Sarah Primiano brings this struggle home and shares the difficulty of the separation of a family member who is deployed. The pain of separation is hard for the one serving, but the pain is even greater for their spouse and children. Sarah writes in a compassionate manner, sharing ideas of how to cope with the sometimes long separation. Anchors Aweigh, Mommy's Underway is beautifully illustrated by Grzegorz Wojtowicz. If you are the spouse of an active military member, thank you for your sacrifice. If you are the parent left behind, use your time wisely and be sure to spend time with your child discussing their emotional needs. It is okay if they are sad. That would be normal. However, do your best to remind them the other parent will soon be back, but in the meantime, you will have fun together while waiting. -Philip Van Heusen for Readers' Favorite Anchors Aweigh, Mommy's Underway is a touching children's book depicting a young girl and her father navigating life while mom serves in the military. The story beautifully captures their resilience and love in the face of separation. With relatable emotions, vibrant illustrations, and a gentle portrayal of military family challenges, the book is a heartwarming read that fosters empathy and conversations about family dynamics. It's a valuable resource for both children and adults, celebrating the strength that comes from supporting one another through tough times."" -JoAnn Dickinson, best-selling children's book author"
