OverviewThe advent of NMR has provided better detail perceptibility in the preoperative visualization of cerebral structures than previously employed imaging techniques. Anatomical preparations were compared to NMR images to render their evaluation more exact and to plan the surgical approach accordingly. The suggested exercises in preparation are not designed as a course in microanatomy but should simply serve as a point of reference for experienced surgeons who venture into problematic regions of the brain and seek preoperative orientation. In addition to the formol-fixed brain preparation and a preparation of the cranial bone, the NMR images of the patients are evaluated. A series of specific examples of problematic surgical interventions emphasize the restrictions of NMR imaging. As yet, its image detail is not sufficient to provide all required information before the surgical intervention.
