OverviewForests play a vital role in the lives of communities, especially rural ones, as they use and exploit forest resources in a variety of ways. Over time, the cohabitation of rural African populations with forest ecosystems has given rise to complex relationships. In Togo, terrestrial ecosystems are made up of semi-deciduous forests, dry forests and open forests, gallery forests and riparian forests of the Guinean and Sudanian savannahs. These forest ecosystems are currently threatened by human activities, and only a few relics can be found in protected areas in the form of patches on the central plain. This book discusses the current state of the forests, the climatic conditions favorable to their development and the role of local communities in forest management through endogenous strategies.
