An Odyssey: My Seven Years as a First Nations Chief

Overview

Bill Tooshkenig became Chief of Walpole Island First Nation at a young age, beginning a journey that would shape his life and community. In An Odyssey: My Seven Years as a First Nations Chief, he shares the stories that led him to leadership and the experiences that defined his years as Chief. Bill was able to travel widely, meeting with leaders from across Canada and around the world. At the same time, he remained deeply connected to his community, always guided by a vision of strengthening his people by helping them reach their full potential. This memoir is both a personal story and a tribute to his family, his people, and the belief that true leadership means helping others grow. Bill Tooshkenig will be remembered as one of the best leaders of his time, a man who believed in people and wanted the very best for them.

Author Information

Chief Bill Tooshkenig devoted his life to advancing the well-being of Walpole Island First Nation and served as Chief for seven years. He guided the community through a period of significant progress in areas ranging from economic growth to local infrastructure. His efforts created lasting opportunities and supported a stronger future for his people. His leadership extended far beyond the role of Chief. He was active on Band Council, contributed to the Walpole Island Board of Education, and supported local economic initiatives. At the same time, he participated in regional and national forums through the Assembly of First Nations and the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians, where he worked to strengthen Indigenous voices and address issues of justice and equality. Family remained at the heart of his life. Married to Shirley for 57 years, he raised two sons and a daughter and was blessed with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Chief Tooshkenig passed away in April 2025. His dedication, courage, and belief in the potential of his people continue to inspire his community and honour his memory.
