Overview

In this substantially revised second edition, the author enlarges the goal of the book through a complete discussion of operating system principles coupled with the implementation issues and the student-developed case studies. Besides, it guides students through today's most widely used operating systems, namely UNIX, Linux, and Windows (NT and Vista). The new chapters and appendices added to some chapters together with modification to existing chapters cover topics that are part of curriculum requirements of most universities.New to this edition: a new chapter on distributed computing covering all major paradigms; a revised chapter on real-time systems providing a better focus on cyclic systems; a new chapter entitled Trends in OS to cover some recent design considerations like virtualization; a new chapter on programming with threads, covering POSIX and windows threads; a new chapter on Linux, giving its architectural details; a new chapter on Windows, giving its architecture and design details; new appendices on PC (its architecture and evolution), on RAID (redundant arrays of inexpensive disk), and on design methods for real-time systems and cryptographic methods; a separate chapter on Vista, highlighting its features and architectural design; and, a new chapter on case studies, detailing how OS-based projects can be implemented by students. The book is intended for the students of computer science and engineering, computer applications, and information technology.
