Interest and fascination with space begins in early childhood as little ones look up into the night sky and wonder about the moon and stars. Curiosity about celestial matters can be dated back to 27773 BC with the Egyptians developing a 365-day calendar based on the phases of Sirius according to Patricia Wooster in An Illustrated Timeline of Space Exploration (Ill. by Eldon Doty, Picture Window, Capstone, 2012, 32 p. 978-1-4048-6660-7). The next of the Early Discoveries jumps to Copernicus in 1543, and finally to The Space Age beginning with the launch of Sputnik 1. Each double-page spread identifies a new period in learning more about space. The timeline concludes with The Future of Space Exploration and the final mission of Discovery on February 24, 2011.Wooster suggest students extend the timeline, but you might also have them fill in more information on the earliest period. A glossary, suggested titles, and an index are included.-- School Librarian's Workshop, The Final Frontier

Author Information

Eldon's first career was as a Seattle policeman, from which he gleaned a collection of vintage mug shots that have inspired many of his more outrageous characters. Following a lifelong love of drawing, he quit his police work and enrolled in the San Francisco Academy of Art. From there, his original line-and-wash cartoons have now evolved into computer-generated illustration using Fractal Painter and Photoshop. Step-by-Step Electronic Design featured his procedure for creating richly detailed mock-historic portraits. He and his wife Sally live in northern California, and he still loves to ride his motorcycle whenever he can.
