""An Essay on Man"" is a philosophical poem by Alexander Pope, published in 1733-34. It is an attempt to rationalize or rather vindicate the ways of God to man (Milton). It is concerned with the place of humankind in the universe; Pope explains that man should accept his position in the ""Great Chain of Being"" as part of God's plan.
