An Essay on Crimes and Punishments (Annotated): Easy to Read Layout - With a Commentary by M. de Voltaire.

Overview

A punishment may not be an act of violence, of one or of many, against a private member of society, it should be public, immediate and necessary; the least possible in the case given; proportioned to the crime, and determined by the laws. Beccaria was an Italian economist and jurist. He wrote on the currency and other economic subjects, but his greatest work was his Treatise on Crimes and Punishments, first published in 1764, in which he argues against capital punishment, and which established his fame as the originator of more humane methods in dealing with criminals. The work was extremely popular, passing through six editions within eighteen months, and was translated into many European languages. This premium edition comes with: . A beautiful Easy-to-Read layout which makes reading comfortable . A short biography of the author . A commentary on the book of crimes and punishments by Voltaire

Reviews

""This little book has done more good than all the books of morality."" - Voltaire, Commentary on the Book On Crimes and Punishments (1766) ""The first four U.S. Presidents, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, were inspired by Beccaria's treatise and, in some cases, read it in the original Italian. On Crimes and Punishments helped to catalyze the American Revolution, and Beccaria's anti-death penalty views materially shaped American thought on capital punishment, torture and cruelty. America's foundational legal documents, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the U.S. Bill of Rights, were themselves shaped by Beccaria's treatise and its insistence that laws be in writing and be enforced in a less arbitrary manner."" - John D. Bessler, The Italian Enlightenment and the American Revolution: Cesare Beccaria's Forgotten Influence on American Law (2017)
