OverviewExcerpt from An Equation for the Field Amplitude in Geometrical Optics In view of these difficulties it seems desirable, therefore, to investigate the possibility of extending the geometrical optics method for treating prope gation in an inhomogeneous medium, especially in connection with numerical techniques and the use of an analog computer. This article will deal with the problem of obtaining the approximate field amplitude in the case where the field of rays is regular. An ordinary differential equation which is coupled to the ray equations and whose solution is inversely proportional to the square of the field amplitude in the geometrical Optics limit will be derived. This differential equation can be integrated numerically by means of the same proce dures which are applied to the ray equations. It may also prove to be of some theoretical value.
